दिवाली से दो दिन पहले, यानी धनतेरस के दिन, शाम के समय घर के बाहर दक्षिण दिशा में दीपक जलाया जाता है।

इस दिन, स्वास्थ्य के देवता धन्वंतरी की पूजा की जाती है। धन्वंतरि को भगवान विष्णु का रूप माना जाता है। देवता धन्वंतरी अपने हाथ में कलश धारण करते हैं। वे अपने कलश से सभी को अमृत देते हैं। उन्हें रंग पीला पसंद है।
