ram navami ayodya

Although the birth of rama is believed to have taken place on chaitra shukla navami all over India, the vaishya community in ayodhya, where rama was born, believes that rama was born on panchami in the month of margashirsha. That panchami is called agahan panchami. (margashirsha is called Agahan in Hindi!)

The basis for this is a mention in tuqlshidasa's 'ram charit mansa'. as follows: mangal mool lagan dinu aaya | him ripu aghan masu suhava ||planet date nakhtu jogu  be baru | lagan sodhi vidhi keenh vicharu ||
